I went out yesterday and pulled to cover off (65 dgrees out!) and began removing my gauges to prep for interior removal. I began removing my throttle control box, and noted its in pretty rough shape. Since I'm putting in all new hydraulic steering, had the mechanic replace the shift cables, I figure I may as well replace the controls. Mechanic never questioned the controls, but the trim switch seems all loose, wobbly, was not like that before it went to the mechanic. When I took the box off the side of the boat, its all corroded also. I must also mention its a 1988 Merc 70hp.
#1, if anyone has replaced the controls, should I stay with Merc, or go with a universal with trim/tilt. #2, if going universal, anyone have recommendations and best place to get it? #3, how puch of a pain is it to replace? I have never messed with the controls/cables. I believe they are adjusted at the engine, not in the control iteself correct? I also need to disconnect them to remove the interior, as they run through holes in the storage compartment under the rear seat.
Thanks!

I have the same motor and found a new remote with wire harness on ebay for $50. Very easy to install.

I have found a few on Ebay, all around $200, but I'm unsure if they will fit...they say "fits all currrent Mercury and Mariner outboards and 1993 ad newer Force outboards". I gues my motor would be considered a "current" Mercury? I have an email into them to ask, but I probably won't get a response till next week.

John,
I confirmed that model that I need, with standard 8 pin bplug on wiring harness. Cheapest I have found is $200. Next question is for you or anyone else. When I remove the cables from the old controls, will they go right back into the new control without adjustments? Am I right that the throttle and linckage adjustments are all at the engine, and just attach to the controls? I plan to un hook the cables, and they may sit in the boat a couple weeks unattached while I work on the interior...the install the new control. Will that be a problem with the adjustments?
Thanks

If you get the same remote they probrably will go in without adjustment.
