Greetings
Seeking advice from all of you out there about a re-power for my '1974 13' Sourpuss.
We have running lights and want to have an electric start with option of a pull start if the battery runs down (if that's even possible). We will also be adding a small portable Raymarine GPS/fishfinder.
Having the maximum horsepower (40) is not a necessity.
Opinion amongst friends and dealers has been somewhat mixed, but, leaning towards one engine in particular.
I wanted to come to all of you who obviously know our boats best and see what your thoughts are.

My 1994 25 Merc 2 stroke has a pull cord as well as electric start and remote steering. Thankfully have not had to use the pull rope but it's good to know that it's there should I get stranded with no battery power.
Mine is a short shaft due to my '72 13 having a notched transome.

I'll put in a good word for my 2010 E-TEC 30. A nice balance of weight and power. Electric and pull start. Used it one season so far and it fired every time with just a quick turn of the key.

I'd like to second the E-TEC 30. I just bought a new 2009 30 HP with electric start and PT&T. It fires right up whether using the key or using the rope which does not need a battery. Great motor that gets my 13 sport right on plane and has a top speed of about 29. I couldn't be happier with it.

Just wondering, what would the weight difference be between the E-tec 30 and my '94 Merc 25hp 2 stroke? Also would the E-tec 30 really be that much more powerful than my Merc 25.

I really appreciate your help.
Looks like it will be the E-Tec 30hp. I was quoted $4,350 for one with electric/pull start and power tilt. Evinrude has a rigging special going on now, too, so, hopefully that will help.
Doe that price sound around "ballpark" for those who bought one?

I paid 3850 about a month ago for the 2009 model but still brand new. Then add the rigging and those numbers are about the same.

Greetings once more - all
Once more thing: For those of you who have re-powered with a 30hp E- Tec, did you stick with the original cable steering?
If so, how did you rig the engine side with respect to steering.?
I would hate to change the integrity (and the originality) of the boat by ripping out the old steering cables, wheel etc.
Any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

When I asked the local etec dealer in my area, they said that I would need to get a new steering system installed with the motor. (I don't remember why)That being said, as long as you can clamp something on the engine to give you room to attach your current steering system to it it would work. See how your old motor was attached and try to copy that. My 2c.
