Hello all.
I have a lower unit without the water pick up screens. They appear to have rotted away. I'm thinking this is not a good thing and they should be replaced to keep debris out of the gearcase voids and from circulating and possibly hanging up in the power head. Is this a legitimate concern ?

Yes, it is...

Mine were broken on my Evinrude 150 so when I replaced the water pump impeller, I replaced the nylon screens at that time.

The ones on my 1985 Evinrude 150 just slid down in place. I forget how they were held down...
Keepers or the water pump... It was very easy to do once the lower unit was taken down, just like replacing a water pump.

But I have one dumb question. Are there 2 screens? I think there are but have not pulled the lower unit apart yet to see for sure. I'm trying to order the parts I need and I'm told there is only one screen by the shop I had planned to use (local guy). The picture I see of the part make me think there are two - one for each side of the lower unit and set of water pick up openings.

I must say I get the info I need to good a good job on my boat here, at this site. This site also keeps me from bleeding money unnecessarily into my project. I wish I would have found you all earlier.

My screen was actually a rectangular basket that fit down inside the lower unit. It was all one piece and because of the shape, this gave the screen on each side of the lower unit intakes.

I am not sure what model engine you have. If you have a OMC/Bombardier, take a look on their parts catalog online.

Here is an example of the Intake Screen on my Evinrude. This clip was taken directly from the Online Parts Catalog. Take a look at #5 in the photo. That is the Screen.

OK, I had a mental block, I just could not see it that way. I need to gain a bit of experience and confidence.

BTW. I have a 1984 Johnson 90 and I came across an entire set of OMC manuals for the 1991 production line - 8 books. These are real OMC service manuals. I believe they cover the 70's through 1991. I'll have them shortly and they should be helpfull.
When I get the books maybee I could scan what someone may need for a particular task and be of some help.

I had thought I lost mine and it turns out it was just up in the lower unit. I took a piece of bent welding rod and fished it down back into place.
