I need some help diagnosing a small omc outboard. It (8hp 1995 omc) wont start unless I spray omc engine tuner into the carb. Runs fine after this. You think I need to remove carb and clean and rebuild ?I've never rebuilt a carb but I guess there's always a first time.I see they have rebuild kit.....BRP(omc).....is tihis fairly simple if you're somewhat mechanicly inclined?......Thanks

One of the jets is probably clogged up. Without a full rebuild, I would first remove the carb and spray it all over with carb cleaner. I would then take a small wire and clean out the slow and fast jets out. Unless it is real bad, you shouldn't have to replace all the jets and seals on it. I only do that when it is leaking. If you clean it out, that should solve your problem.

When you say it runs fine after you get it started with the spray, can you be more specific? It idles and accelerates fine/runs normally? Restarts fine rest of the day?

Just went through this with my 4 hp Yamaha. First, find a parts diagram on the internet to see how it fits together. Remove the jets and needle valve and clean everything thoroughly, removing all varnish. Soaking in parts cleaner over night worked for mine. I did not clean thoroughly the first time and the engine would not idle properly.

Since it runs well when warm, before pulling the carb and rebuilding, I'd take a quick look at the gasket between the carb and intake manifold and check the tightness of the two carb mounting nuts. You can also try spraying some of the tuner on that gasket when starting cold to see if there may be an air leak there.
