Just acquired this boat and the previous owner has deck tanks all over the place. I want to use the below deck tanks. Since the console does not sit on top of the deck I assume it will be relatively easy to "lift" the deck and examine the tanks for condition/replacement. I have some skills but am not a mechanic. Is this something I should leave to the pros? Does anyone have some hints?

Boston Whaler did not produce the Outrage 22 until 1979. Can you clarify what boat you have?

The 1977 Outrage 21 had a 40 gallon built in fuel tank made of aluminum by Florida Marine Tanks (FMT).

Given the boat is now 30 years old and the previous owner was using on-deck fuel tanks, I suspect the original tank is kaput.
I suggest you order a new tank for FMT and replace the original one. I do not think this is a small job but one you can probably do yourself if you are well organized ahead of time.
Do some research. I vaguely remember there being some discussion of the newer replacement tanks made by FMT having the fuel fill necks taller than the originals and there being a clearance problem with the fuel tank cover (floor).
