Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Evinrude trim/tilt has me stumped

1989 40HP evinrude trim/tilt worked (trimmed up & down) but would slowly leak down. Disassembled, replaced seals, reassembled and now it does not work! Fixed it good!
Trim motor runs. Driveshaft is in place. When motor is raised the trim/tilt will hold it tilted at any angle. So the ram seals and check valves by the pump are good.
With the motor raised, when I turn the trim motor on (trim up or down) it just drops down.
I can raise the motor with the manual bypass valve open or closed. I don't think I should be able to raise it with the valve closed, correct?
Reservoir is full. When I run the trim motor to bleed the system, I hear the motor turning but nothing else happens. I've exercised the ram with the manual release open and closed. I've double checked the shuttle valve assembly against the drawings and my photo when disassembiling the unit.
It's like the pump failed while sitting on the bench. Any ideas?

Sounds as though something is wrong with the manual bypass. If it is open I don't think you should be able to raise it as that is the screw that you loosen to let the pressure off to lower the motor manually. I'd check and see if something was assemble incorrectly there

Thanks.
Disassembled bypass and the shuttle valve assembly last night. Everything checked out.
Removed the oil pump, submersed it in oil and powered it with an electric drill via its driveshaft. I expected to see oil flow in/out of the pump - nothing.
Is this a valid test? and does it mean the pump is kaput?
