I recently purchased a 1989 13' SS with 1989 28 hp Johnson motor. I plan to winterize it this weekend.
Can anyone tell me how much gear oil I will need and what's the best stuff to use?Should I try and find the factory gear oil?

You can't ever go wrong using the factory gear oil and that's what I use in my LU. Also, I can't imagine that you'd need more than a quart for your Lower Unit. Google a Johnson dealer and call their Parts department and ask them as to how much you'll need.

Thanks for the info.
Is there any difference between Mercruiser LU oil vs. Johnson/Evinrude? The reason I ask is because there isn't any J/E dealers close by?

If there is, it's probably minimal. Try ordering it from

You can't go wrong with how much. Fill from the lower (drain) until it comes out the top.
