I have a 1991 Johnson 25 and i want to refinish the engine cowling. I am looking for suggestions for removing the current decals. Any suggestions would be helpful. Picking at them is driving me nuts.

I used a whole bunch of goo gone. I tried razor blades and the raser attachment on my drill to no avail. It is a tough job, but that worked best for me.

Heat gun works well but not too hot though. Be careful not to peel the paint off with the decal as you will have to fill in any chips before repainting. I think it may even be gelcoat? Then use goo gone to remove residual adhesive. Let me know if you find a place that has OEM decals. I need just the back one for my 93 Johnson 70.

Good call I forgot I did use the heat gun for the big pieces. It isn't gelcoat, it is clear coat. You can buy that in a rattle can to finish up with after painting if you don't use a sprayer.

I have a crazy mindset about motor cowlings...especially smaller portables ( stealables). I like to keep them looking as ratty as possible with the inards purring like a kitten. What kind of thief wants an old beater motor right?

All go and no show! Vanity is not my strong suit!

Blake might be right. I had my 15' Sport at the marina to have carb. work done on my 70 HP Evinrude. It was a Special Edition Motor with a fancy paint job. I got a call from the marina and was fearing the news that I needed a total overhaul. Intead he said the 10' cyclone fence had been cut and my motor and several other smaller motors off other boats had been stolen overnight. My motor was replaced with another 70 HP Evinrude but it was never quite the same.
My insurance agent said it was common for boat motor thiefs to come into an area and steal 8 or 10 motors in one night after casing the locations. He said within several days my motor was probably forsale out of a big marina on Lake of the Ozarks or a place like that. I also had a 40 HP Evinrude stolen off my boat in the driveway in broad daylight.
I was a work but my wife was home and the garage door was up. We had a long driveway and they pulled up - cut the steering and battery cables and it was gone. I got home and saw the boat with no motor. I asked her if she'd heard anything and she said no. These thiefs were good at what they did.
