Has anyone built or bought a suitable engine stand for working on their motor over the winter in the garage and off the boat?

I have to build or buy something and just wondering if there are any good ideas out here.

I printed out the download from this site, and gave it to a friend who is pretty handy. Works great. I have a 40hp on in, and the wheels allow me to roll it around in the garage and driveway.

I have built about 5 or 6 like this Lumber is 2X4s with casters for wheels. This one is shown with a 7 1/2 Merc but I have also used this one for a V-4 Evinrude. Dimensions are not shown make it so the skeg will be about 4" off the floor, and tilt it back about 12-15 degrees, same as a transom. Screw it together with deck or drywall screws.

Here is another way to go if your not into building stuff. Purchase an automotive engine stand, and bolt a double thickness of 3/4" plywood to it. Although this type of engine stand is capable of handling a 700 lb auto engine. I wouldn`t use it for more than a 40-50 hp outboard becuase it doesn`t tilt back like a boat transom and might be a little tippy with a heavier outboard.

This is the same engine stand as in my original post with the 7 1/2 Merc on it now beefed up to hold an antique 75 V4 Evinrude. You will notice I just made it about 6 Inches or so longer. I have made a stand like this for holding a V6 Suzuki 150 hp. Just use bigger wood (2x6s and 2x12 for the motor board. just make il longer and wider and higher if it is a 25: shaft outboard.

My son and I built the motor stand from the plans here on Whaler Central. There is a picture of the stand with a Mecury 15 4 stroke on my personal page. It is easy to build, it took us a couple of hours using a circular saw and a mitre saw. We made one small mistake but the stand functions perfectly. It was a fun father/son project.

I started building the bottom base with wheels out of 4x4 lumber I had laying around and using the plans that Guts sent me.

A buddy stopped over and claimed he had the solution I was looking for. He did! His wife bought him an engine stand for car motors one Christmas and he has never and will never use it.

After looking it over and putting it all together I am sure it will work perfect with a few tweaks. It claims to hold 1000 pounds so I should be fine with a double thick plywood plate where the car motor would normally go.

I was OK with building the one I was working on but I also wanted to fold it up for storage when not in use and that was a small challenge. The car motor stand is all welded steel but comes apart with pull pins for storing. Cost me a case of beer and I get to help him drink it when he comes over to help get my outboard mounted.

Thank you Joe! That is the one that Guts sent me direct and I was building from. I was in the process of working out how to build it so it could be folded down for storage when my buddy offered up his motor stand for car engines.

Like many here, I just don't have room to store a lot of these devices when not in use so being able to fold it down when not in use was a big consideration.

Me and the boss argue all the time. She wants a bigger house and I am fine right here but want a much bigger barn than anything she might imagine!

A couple of years ago I purchased an inexpensive automotive engine stand from a local Harbor Freight Tools for about $50 for my old Merc 115. Worked great and was plenty stable for my needs. The arms for the mounting bolts were adjustable so I was able to bolt the motor directly to the stand with no wood.
