I have a 15' 89 SS with a 70 hp Yamaha motor and I am having problems with the power trim. The trim switch on the motor does not work, not even a sound that the switch is engaging. However, the trim switch in the throttle does work, I can always get the motor to go up and about half the time it will trim in the down position. I have fluid in the hydraulic reservior.

Does anyone have any "easy"solutions?

first thing I would do is to remove power (disconnect the battery) and "Ohm" out your switch on your motor. Then if those results indicate that the switch is okay, I'd reapply power and check to see if you have 12V coming to the switch. Then, if power is present, I'd activate the switch and check to see if 12V is getting out of the switch.

How does one OHM out the switch?

"Ohming" out a switch is a continuity check. With power off, you take the two leads of your Ohmeter and place one lead on the input and one lead on the output terminal. Then you close the switch and it should show zero Ohms.....or a short. Once you release the switch, the short should go away and then become an open.

Thanks, so I guess my next buy is an OHM meter. You helped me a year or so ago, suggesting i buy my bimini top from i-boats. So thanks again

You're welcome Mike.

Here's a link to a multi meter (the OHMing function is simply a feature on the multimeter) as an example.

And a link on how to use them:

You can get them at Radio shack or Walmart for pretty cheap.

Good Luck!

I may have to try this as well. I've recently replaced my 1987 90 Yammy trim w/OEM parts, and after several hours of good use this summer, found the throttle trim is intermittent, but only in the up selection. Trim selection on the motor works fine thankfully.

I removed the four screws off the throttle cover mount, but that seems like it's just for cosmetic reasons, nothing moved. I'll look into the OHM meter first, then find those connections-unless you think it's something else?
