ok I'll try to make sense here. I have a 1987 40 Yamaha with remote controls. I pulled the lower unit to replace the water pump. Everything went fine... until I went to reconect the linkage bar that is located below the power head. It has the double nut and you can see it just below the mounting bracket. Anyway the manual said to connect it while the shifter is in rev and to set the rod on the lower unit down so it will also be in rev. Now everything is back together, but and here is where my age is showing. I can't remeber if it is acting correctly. I HAVE NOT STARTED THE MOTORE YET. When the shifter is in neutral the prop spins freely. When it is in rev the prop is locked in both directions (with a bit of lash left to right) when the shifter is in forward the prop spins backwards, and you can hear the dogs clicking, and won't turn the opposit direction. Does this sound right? When I say won't spin I mean, it will spin if I move the fly wheel.

Any ideas? Does it sound correct? I don't want to fire the motor until I am confident that I won't be doing any damage to the lower unit...
Thanks
John

I have a similar motor and have replaced the impellor several times too. Each time I reinstall the lower unit, I always run the motor and shift it in forwad and reverse making sure the propeller moves in both directions.

Check out your system while the motor is running. Stay clear of the prop while it's spinning though.
