I've lusted after the Montauk since I was a kid, and now the dream is real. I just brought her home from PA on Sunday, and she is absolutely gorgeous. She's a 26 year old garage queen used only a few weekends a year on a lake in the Poconos. She still sports the same '84 Evinrude 90 she came with from the showroom, and it runs like a top. Boat and motor are both in immaculate original condition and have never seen salt water (that's about to change).
I've been around boats my whole life, but this is the first Whaler I've ever owned. I'm looking forward to the experience, as well as to sharing ideas and advice with all of you good people at Whaler Central. This is a great, hugely informative website. I'll post some pics as soon as I figure out how...

Congratulations

The Montauk 17' is one of my favorite all around models of the Classics.

DT, congrats! I'm sort of searching for a 17' Montauk too......

How many hours are on the motor?

Great find!

Congrats, I picked mine up ('87 Montauk) a few months ago and know exactly how you feel. Just wait 'til you get her out on the water!

Thanks. I'm really happy with the purchase. PO's best guess was about 25 hours per year on average, including a few years when it was not used at all. A compression check showed all four cylinders to be operating at 120-125 psi, so that's a good sign.
Good luck with your search. If I come across any deals, I'll let you know.
