I have 2 2001 150HP mercury EFI engines on my 1981 25ft outrage. while i was out in the gulf today, suddenly one of the engines just gave out. when i say gave out, heres what i mean: we were probably at 3/4 throttle going about 38mph and decided to slow it down a bit. when we slowed it down, one of the engines just went straight to idle and would not go when we gave it throttle. we shut it down and restarted it, it goes into gear, it just wont go no matter how much throttle we try to give it. it just sits in idle. any ideas? thanks for the help.

Did you check the throttle linkage? Broken cable?? Sounds like the linkage popped off. Also remove the hood and verify the linkages are moving when the throttle is advanced. I suspect the cable has come loose either at the engine or the helm.

I've had the linkage pop off under the cowl of my 150

same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago. Check the cables in the throttle control box. One of my cables was torn, and it was an easy fix

i will check the linkage and keep you posted. the only thing is, we asked the mechanic and he thought it was weird so he said to take it out again and see if it does it. we were on the water and it worked again for about a 1/2hr to an hour and it did the same thing again. just thought that was weird that it would work and not work. could it be some kind of sensor going bad?
thanks a ton guys. you're lifesavers!

I brought it to an authorized mercury dealer yesterday and it was put on the diagnostic. they called today and were certain they found the problem.
it was the ignition control module. at idle, the computer was receiving readings saying that it was running at over 9000 rpm's! the over-rev was then kicking into action and putting the engine down to idle speed. to make sure, he switched the ICM to the other engine and sure enough, the same thing happened.
hopefully this solves the problem, as i have had the boat a few months and have had it in the water for about an hour total! im psyched to get this thing going.
thanks for all your help! i actually got more help here than iboats, and i appreciate it.
