Have another problem with my 1976 30hp Johnson seahorse. I can start the engine, and it goes about 5 mph tops, and the throttle seems to do nothing. when i use the reverse, the rpms go very high and the engine does not sound good. Whats goin on?

Cables hooked up wrong in the remote control.

That may be, but everything was working fine for about 3 days. Could it just be that the control box for the throttle is broken/has electrical issues.

We're gonna need some more info to help you out. Don't be afraid to be too detailed. Every bit of info either rules something out or reinforces a troubleshooting decision.

See if the cable has come loose onthe engine, if all is ok then look at the controller itself. When you put it in rev. does the engine go into rev. and move the boat?

yes, the boat does go in reverse when I move the throttle in that direction, however, the rpms are far higher than normal. The odd thing is, the boat never idles, as soon as you start the engine its already going a few mph forward.
