Hi All,

I'm looking to repower my 1987 13' SS. It came with a 40 Yamaha. I was thinking about putting a 50 on it. When you go up to a 50 I see all the manufactures put trim on as an option. I realllly want power trim. Am I looking for trouble? Also I'm thinking about staying with a Yamaha. Looking to go to a 4 stroke (I think). Bring on the comments please. Should I stay with a Yamaha? I believe I need a short shaft 20"? Advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

You don't have to go to 50hp to get power trim. You can definitely get it with a 40hp and usually less. Personally, the one thing I would change on my boat (and may change still) is to get rid of the 4-stroke in favor of an Evinrude E-Tec. Holeshot and throttle response on my boat are weak. Sure, it runs quiet and smooth, but so do E-Tecs.

Want to buy my Mercury 40hp 4-stroke? About 30 hrs and not a scratch on it.

Some people have put 50's on their 13's. Weight on the transom is the main concern. I have heard that some dealers won't put a 50 on because the boat is only rated to a max of 40. The Honda 50 weighs 205 vs the Yamaha at 237. 50 etec is the same as the 40 etec at 240lbs. They all may weigh more with power trim, I don't know. btw 15" is a short shaft and 20" is what you need for your model year. If your current motor is running well you could just buy a power trim unit and save some cash. My 2c.

Just looked at Yamaha's website. And the 40 4 stroke has dropped down to 214lbs. Makes me want one now.

Just looked at Yamaha's website to confirm topics info.
FYI, the carb versions of the F40TLR were listed as 200 lbs in the early 2000s. They were also listed as available in S and XL shaft lengths. Just happen to have a F40TLRZ, new in shipping container, in my garage, may sell if you can live with easy to repair carbs.
Please don't start on the "obsolete" thing guys.

A buddy of mine just sold his mid 80's 13' with a 2004 Yamaha 40hp with power trim on it. I had the oportunity to drive it a few thing and I'm here to tell ya, that thing would scream!!!

I'm a Yamaha guy and think they are fantastic motors myself. The E-tec is a. Awesome motor too and this past weekend I was able to see just how great the E-tecs are in person.
