i installed a 1998 40 hp merc tracker on my 13' whaler.
i need a diagram or photo on how to hook up the gear and accelerator cables as well as the color code on wiring the loose wires coming from the wire harness. it's electric start and tilt and trim.
I would appreciate any help.

At the harness, the purple wire is the ignition lead to the gauges, black is negative, grey is tach sender, tan is temp sender (use only if you have a temp sender on the engine), tan with blue stripe is temperature horn, brown with white stripe is trim sender (use only if you have a trim sender on engine - not likely). There will also be a trim cable three prong plug (female) which plugs into the matching trim wire plug coming from the engine control. Power trim wires with bullet connectors also have to be plugged in at the engine when the ignition harness plug is connected.

At the engine, the shift cable is hooked up first, and is at the bottom. Put engine in neutral, center shift slide in middle of play range with a very slight favor of reverse, attach shift cable. The round barrels are for making the adjustment to proper length before inserting into their retainer. Check prop to make sure gears are fully engaged. The throttle cable goes on top, and should have the barrel adjusted so that there is a slight push against the idle stop. You should be able to slide out a piece of paper without tearing it. If it tears, there is too much pre-load, and shifting will be difficult.

Thank you for the response, I’ll try today to do the wiring.

I’ve searched for hours and still can't find a drawing or schematic anywhere. I know where the connections on the motor but I don't know where the barrels are suppose to sit.

The cable adjustment barrels go into a vertically oriented fitting with two round holes in it, and a plastic snap cover to hold them in place. Can't miss it, unless it is missing!
