I have a 1989 30 horsepower Mariner engine for my 13 footer. The engine sat for almost 10 years but seems to be in good shape. I would like to know what kinds of parts i definitely want to replace. I dont really know much at all about engines so im looking for some help.

Replace impeller, clean carbs, replace fuel filter and tank. That should get you started.

And with any engine that's been sitting for some time, I always spray fogging oil into each cylinder and turn the flywheel by hand to distribute, just to get some lube in there before using the starter to crank it. While the plugs are out, inspect them to see if they need a cleaning (and are gapped properly) or should be replaced depending on their condition.

Most people don't drain the carbs when putting an engine away for extended periods. The rubber hoses will rot out as well. I just rebuilt the 3 carbs on my Yamaha 40, pretty simple. Buy the carb kit and get a couple of cans of carb cleaner. Use compressed air to blow out all the passages.

When you replace the water pump use a marine rated anti-sieze paste on the bolts before you put them back in, the next water pump change out will be easier. Grease the engine often, no less than once a week during use. I use a little bit of *"Sea Foam" in my fuel tank to keep the fuel fresh, and system running clean.
