Any ideas why BW went from 3 hook rod holders to 2 hook holders, sometime around 1987, at least on the 18's? Same amount of material and labor, more or less.

I think the answer may have to do with interference with the Lee rod holders and items placed on the third, and upper, hook.

Walter - My 1986 18 came with the 2 hook racks. After a few years, because of the poor BW varnish job, they began to delaminate, and I replaced them with the black starboard ones, in 3 hook version, that were being used on the 22's and 25' in 1991. I did have to cut them down a little to make the fit under the lower freeboard of the 18.

Other than available vertical height, , I have no reason for the change to the 2 hook style.

Walter, my 1986 18 came with 3 hook racks. If I put rods with spinning reels in the bottom hooks, the reels lay on the deck. Maybe it was an issue like that.
