I plan on getting either a 13' sport or 15' classic whaler soon and I am going to add on a lean to or car port behind a shed that I have to help keep the elements off of it. Does anyone have the length and width of the trailer and height of a 13' sport? I don't need a full garage, just more or less something I can store it in.
Thanks,
Brian

I have a 13' that is stored in my garage that is 18' deep. With the cavitation plate on my motor hitting the back wall, I have about two feet of clearance between the tip of the trailer tongue to the garage door. I think I can get a 15' in the garage if I had a folding tongue on the trailer. I hope this helps you out.

Thanks, Cliff, any idea on how wide you trailer is wheel to wheel and approx. height of the motor. I building this just to fit the boat into during the winter.

Years ago I built a lean-to like you are describing. I built it extra long for the day I bought a bigger boat. It was wide enough for legal loads, so that wasn't an issue. Later, when I bought a bigger boat, it wouldn't fit UNDER the roof....I hadn't made it high enough. Poor planning to say the least. That 40 or so year old shed is still there, housing a tractor and junk. What I am saying is build the shelter at least 9' wide and maybe 8' tall to whatever length you need now. If you upgrade later you won't have to rebuild.

Length with trailer has much to do with the trailer itself, and there are many different trailers.
I know my 13 sport and my 17 Montauk are almost the same length on the trailer because the tongue is extra long on the 13's trailer and it is extra short on the Montauk. Some have swing away tongues to make it shorter for garages.
Height is again very different based on trailer, my Montauk sits high because the wheels are narrow and under the boat, but I have seen some sit lower but with wider wheels and the boat down between them.

brack. My garage is a two car garage with two single wide garage doors (pretty crappy set up if you want to park a boat in there caddy corner) that are 8' wide each. With an 8' foot wide door, my Whaler fits in the garage with room to spare on each side of the boat. Also, I measured from the floor to the top on the cowling of my motor and it's just under 5' high. Keep in mind I have a 15" transom and the motor doesn't sit as high as a 13' Whaler with a 20" transom.

Thanks for the help, I talked to our local planning commitee and as long as I stay under 120sq feet and under one story high I do not need a building inspection. I figure I build something approx. 8 x 15 x 8' tall with a sloping roof line to approx. 6 1/2' this should fit either a 13' or 15' with a foldable tongue and be tall enough for the cowling.

Watch out for the width on trailers that have guide on poles with lights mounted to them. I had to take the lights off the guide poles on my Montauk's trailer and put them down on the trailer behind the wheels to fit in my narrow 8ft wide garage door.
My 13 was close, those guides were wide much wider than trailer and boat.

A 15' shed is too short unless you're willing to have the tongue and part of the bow sticking out. For comparison, here are some measurements from my 15'.
The motor has to be tilted slightly so I can trailer it in and out of the shed. It's a 60 hp Merc and it adds 3' to the length. The boat is 15 and a half feet, and the tongue with spare tire adds another two and a half feet. So the total length is 21'. My shed is 20' deep so I have a foot of tongue sticking out all the time. Fortunately the roof overhang is a foot and a half.
My trailer width is just over 6'. My shed opening is 8', which makes it easy to back it in. I could get away with a 7' opening and have a few inches of clearance either side, but it would take longer to park it.

Again thanks for the great answers and help, I would rather stick with 8' width and go 15' in length to get around building codes here. It is going to be a pole barn/shed so I will be able to add on more roof later if I need to. Again this is mostly for for winter storage so any parts sticking out will be wrapped in a tarp also.
