I may be confusing my terms here. I have a 1975 montauk. Dont like the anchor bracket setup which allows the anchor to bang around pretty good and is causing the screws to loosen, water can get in through the holes, bad news. Ive been putting the anchor in my cooler. What I'm wondering is if they make any kind of an extension (anchor rode? unless rode means anchor+chain) I'm second guessing myself. But anyway. Do they make a roller extension type thing so the anchor can be pulled up and tied to that? Maybe something I could construct.... Wondering if anyonbe else has come up with any solutions. I'm often in relatively rough seas, and the less banging the better.

They make anchors now that are plastic/rubber coated (or you can buy plastic dip) and do it yourself. They have no rust and do not scratch the fiberglass. They come in several colors also. Same with the chain, it is coated with a plastic type rubber. I stow my danforth in the bow locker, it is on an angle and seems to jam itself in there and not move. Use the anchor line to cushion it or use garden hose over the ends or rubber as a bottom for it to lay on. Having a bow pulpit like you mention, use a bungee cord to secure it from moving.
I do not like the pulpit as it can get in the way when docking or trailering, plus what you mentioned.
Attaching the anchor while anchoring. Use the trailer bow eye.
It needs no chafing gear and the angle is less meaning better holding power. It also means no line on the deck or rubbing the rail etc.
For safety-Never anchor just from the stern, that is very dangerous.

Sean -
In looking at your personal page, I note your locker is smaller than the smirked Montauk. You may want to mount the anchor off the bow rail (seen it on someone's page) and store the chain and line in the locker.
Hope it helps.

In looking at your personal page the anchor looks like overkill to me. I may be wrong but I think a smaller one would work and fit in your anchor locker as well. I'm not a big fan of Danforth style anchors. I like Bruce style anchors, they are easier to stow and physically smaller than their Danforth counterparts. If you want to stay with the Danforth type there are brackets available that clamp to your bow rail and allow rhe anchor to hang there. Almost any marine store will carry them.

Very cool. All quite appealing ideas. And well quite frankly, I'm not a big fan of the small danforths either. Larger ones for bigger boats can be brilliant in sand, but Ive always had issues trying to set the smaller ones... But I digress. Ive been anchoring up in rocky areas, and managed to mangle the living hell out of my danforth. Suppose it doesnt matter as I primarilly need it in the rocks, at least currently. I think a combination of the rubber coating and a smaller bruce that fits in my bow locker would be ideal. The bowrail comes loose of its own accord. ANy extra weight I fear will make things worse.
Thanks so much for the input guys! gotta get back to class now.

Anyone know where to find a smaller Bruce? I'm using a 9# Danforth with 10' of chain and 150' of line that came off my J/29. Major overkill.

I bought my 11 lb. Bruce knock-off from Hamilton Marine. It is overkill for my Outrage 17.

If you are anchoring in rocks, ditch the danforth and go with a mighty might.
Keep it in a milk crate with enough rode to fish your spots.
Toggin' I assume :-)

I switched to the smaller "Danforth", it hold's well but, my area of operation is all sand or mud bottom, for "Rock's" you might want to switch to a different style of anchor.

I was keeping my Danforth in my cooler too. It's a bad solution as it beats the hell out of the cooler and obviously prevents it from being used for it's intend purpose, keeping things cool. I bought a new cooler this summer and ditched my Danforth. (Mine was a tad large for a 17' too)
I replaced it with a 8 Lb. folding Grapnel Anchor from West Marine. Using my old rode and chain it fits very easily in the bow locker. It's worked fine and is kind of cool... It say's I can go boating or I can storm the cliffs at Normandy.
