Hey guys and girls....if you have been looking for a new cable drum steering helm I have found a source in the UK for them. The cost is about $50.00 US and around $90.00 to ship to you depending on your location.

Contact Tony - TG Marine [tony@tgmarine.co.uk]

To view the item goto the following: http://www.osculati.com/cat/Scheda.aspx?id=3232

Osulati will not sell to you direct but TG Marine in the United Kingdom will sell to you direct.

Those are the first new ones I`ve seen, except for the ones made for race boats, which are unsuitable for Whalers, as the drum is exposed on the outside of the dash.

They are still popular in Europe. The best thing is they come with a 3/4" tapered shaft and key. Should work perfectly. I will advise when mine arrives.

Many folks don`t realize that cable and pulley steering systems are the safest systems around becuase they can easily be inspected for wear and problems. It is the only type of systems used on outboard race boats for this reason, and some of these boats will go over 100 mph. They also are the best feeling systems and engine torque is not a factor. Here is a pic. of the back end of my 13 footer, with cable and pulley steering. I had to back a bracket from aluminum to connect the motor to the cable system as no one makes them anymore.

Here is the cable and steering system installed on my raceboat. It is different as the 105hp motor has a steering bar and the steering drum is exposed.

I'm with you Rich....I think the old cable pulley system is the best!
