Need advice for fishing the Chesapeake etc.
Sure, I can drop a line and catch a few but how does "one" really learn to do it right and go after the big ones?
The stores are filled to the brim with 10 million hooks, lures and baits but what really works? Which great books you have found and could recommend? (Rudow's Guide to Fishing the Chesapeake ??)
Saturday - We entered Sandy Neck (Sorry - Sandy Point) State Park near Annapolis at the Bay Bridge - once it was $5 for a car load now it's $6 per person - kids included! What a gouge - apart from its great ramps and location to the Chesapeake I was a little peeved at this unforeseen cost.
* Advice on free ramps to the Chesapeake - parking fees or reasonable fees okay ($10 example)
I want to go from casting a line to real dinner food.
It's a big topic but maybe good reading recommendations would be best to kick this off.
Thanks
P.S. Have I told you yet how much I love my new E-Tec

Mark,
I can't help you with your area, but I can tell you a few things. Many of the launches/marinas in this area have fish cleaning areas. You can hang around there for a while as the boats start coming back in and get some info from the people cleaning fish. If they won't say much, maybe you can cut a stomach or two open on the fish that they have cleaned to see what they have been eating. That is always a good indicator. Here, if they are eating shrimp or porgy I use the "Gulp" artificial with great success. I fish alongside live bait and get the same results. Good luck and let us see some pics of those giants.

Mark, Not sure where Sandy Neck State Park is, but Sandy Point State part charges less before 6:00 am.
Lenny's Rudows book is very good. He is better in person during his seminars.
Join you local chapter of the MSSA. They have guest speakers each month by the best Bay Fishermen.

Glad to see your finally on the water Mark. You should take Henry up and go down to the lower bay/Potomac. Let him show you how to fish for rocks! Heck, I would love to go myself and get some tips from the great Yiddel! Maybe it is time for a late season fishtogether. Otherwise there are a lot of places to put in, especially on the east side of the bay. I have a year pass for Queen Annes county boat ramps that only cost about $20, for a year. You can also put in at Chesapeake Beach or Solomons for a few bucks. I personally don't like Sandy Point as much, especially in the summer-way to crowded. There is also less of a problem with lesions on the rockfish in the lower bay. Apparently it is much more common to find sick rocks around the bay bridge.
I am going to check out the fishing around the natural gas platforms next friday, put in at Chesapeake Beach. A first for me but I hear the fishing is great down there. Hows that new E tec run?

Mark,
If you’re willing to travel to Sandy Point, then here is a link to other ramps in MD - http://mddnr.chesapeakebay.net/fish/state2.html. Also, a great Bay fishing forum is http://www.tidalfish.com/forums/chesapeake-angler-original-board-maryland-angler/. Hope to see you out there – fall is great striper fishing.

You guys are the best! Honest to Gawd!
What a brilliant community.
Henry - I'm more then happy to run this baby hard down to you for a lesson in Rock. I missed the earlier swim meet as you know.
Even this has given me a lot to work on.
Cheers!

This is really helpful and a little bit sad in a way that there aren't more ramps. A+ for this - bookmarked.

Okay, lets do the end of season Halloween/Fall cruise.
I don't intend on closing my season since I missed the entire summer. Sunday was beautiful out near Fort Washington.

mark,
tidalfish.com is a great resource and the folks there are willing to share. You can also hang around bass pro shop outside baltimore.
If you coming to whaler down at Henry's, let me know and I will plan to come down that weekend.

Our family tipically fishes around Point Lookout, where the Potomac dumps into the Bay and around the Target ship and Bouy # 37 (I think). We have been using umbrella rigs for awhile now and this spring we caught a 48" 37# Rock fish. That is the biggest that I have ever seen. You can see what the rig looks like here: http://www.daybreakfishing.com/Umbrellas.html
Good Luck

Mark,
I'm in Florida, so I have no first hand knowledge of your area. However, I can tell you after fishing most of my life that LIVE BAIT RULES. Go to a bait & tackle shop close to where you plan to fish and buy live bait or frozen bait. Ask the guy at the local tackle shop for advice.
Good luck,
Brian

Cast net is great for free live bait.
They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety.
