I recently took a run down "the ditch" on a sailboat returning home from an offshore race. We went from Georgetown, SC back to Charleston. It was a great ride with tons of scenery and wildlife. I'm really considering doing some cruising with my Montauk, including some overnights.

I'd certainly pick up a spiral bound chart book as well as get the G2 Chart for my Garmin 530s. Probably need to consider a SeaTow membership too.

Anyone else do this?

Yes, there is actually a book written by John Mirassou, "Only in America" about his trip with two of his buddies, plus some other folks that "tagged along" occasionally. He is a member here with the name OIA. And, he did it in a BW 17 Montauk. He actually cruised all of the "Great Loop". You would probably want to read the book (it's a quick read, and very entertaining). You'll get some good info, plus a little insight.

I also have a Montauk 17, but have not tried overnighting on it. I think it is doable, but definately not stellar housing.

If I planned to do any overnights on the boat, I would have canvas, forward shelter, windshield, fly top with curtains. The reason is to keep rain off and close up a sleeping area against bugs.

Matt, when I first saw your post the first thing I thought about was the Book that txmntman talked about, "Only in America'. I just finished reading the book and it's a GREAT read. They went down the ICW in the same area youtalked about on their way to NYC from Fort Lauderdale.

If ya want a little insight on making anICW run.....get a copy of the book and read what they did....it's great!

Matt,
Did some cruzing 2 weeks ago out of Georgetown while at the beach. Need to add the Pee Dee and Black Rivers to your list. Put a few pictures from our spring trip on my page.
Saw several Whalers out, including one of our WC friends.
