Paying for a Whaler, long distance. Now what?

I have found the boat I want. Now what do I do? it's a 1995 13' Dauntless. Taking everyone's advice, I had a surveyor look it over. He found a couple of small problems the seller fixed and retested and it's a go. The surveyor rated it as an average boat.
I'm paying about $1500 more than he feels it's worth but the same boat I have seen selling here in California for $4000 more.
Question: what are the different ways one can pay for a boat almost 3000 miles away?

A few years ago, my daughter bought a 20` Bertram on E-Bay. The boat was in Michigan and she lives in Florida. First she sent the owner a small deposit, to show good faith. Then she located a shipper. She sent the balance of the money for the boat to the shipper, who paid for the boat when he picked it up. She also sent a picture of the boat to the shipper so he could confirm the boat he was picking up was the same boat she bought. It worked out very good.

Sometimes it's a leap of faith. I bought a 2002 Dodge 2500 diesel from Colorado. Wired the money to his bank acct so I would have a paper trail.

Seems like after you have went to the trouble of getting the surveyor to look at the boat and knowing some items were fixed you should have built some trust with the seller. I sold a boat long distance once. I have the guy wire money to my account. He felt better knowing the bank would have paper trail if his boat did not show up.

well yes, there is indeed some trust there.well as much trust as there can be for being almost 3k miles away.and its why i will be buying the boat from the seller. I'm just have never done anything like this and I'm really trying to find the BEST way to get this done.and I had no idea that a money wire was good way to go.any help is greatly appreciated

Working through the shipper does sound like a good Idea. The only draw back I see is that so many internet scams involve My shipper will pay bla,bla,bla. That is kinda what I was saying about having a bit of trust with the seller. It is very hard for everyone to feel comfortable in a long distance sale.

Well don`t forget the seller already had a $500 cash deposit. If the shipper never showed up he had that money, and his boat. I`m sure he got paid before the boat was loaded. I have bought 3 low priced outboards from E-Bay, and paid by PayPal. That way the deal is guaranteed, or so they say, but I got my motors. Unfortunately all were damaged, but insured.
