Greetings, I'm considering the purchase of a 2009 150 Montauk as my first Boston Whaler. What is the general opinion on an out-the-door price of $25,100? I need to have a custom trailer (narrower) and this price is included.

Thanks for the information. The dealer list price is $21,900. It seems that when I factor in a different trailer (~$1200) and the tax and license fees for California, I'm looking at a little over $25,000 out the door. I've never purchased a new boat, and I'm wondering how much haggling I can do. I heard that the dealer markup is at least 50%.

I figure the chain is divided in thirds. A boat that costs the manufacturer $10k, costs the dealer $20k, and is listed for $30k. I would figure $20k with the upgraded trailer is about right, without tax. But all economics are local. How is the economy by you?

I bought a new 2007 Montauk 150 with Karavan trailer in October of 2006. It came with the bow rails, swim ladder, fishing package, and livewell. I also had them install a Garmin GPS/Fishfinder, Icom VHF wiih antenna, and a bimini top. Total out the door price was $25,031 from Schock Boats, Newport Beach, CA. Hope this helps.

Thanks RandyK, this is good data. The boat that I'm looking at is a bare bones 150 Montauk, I have asked for a narrow trailer, so there is some cost, but there are no electronics involved. I'm going to set my offer at $23,000.

Does one define the price before the sea trail? I assume, yes.

I took RandyK's data: $25,031 in 2006 and used an on-line calculator (http://www.measuringworth.com/calcula.../uscompare) to project this cost to 2009. The output was only good to the year 2008. The average result in terms of 2008 money was: $26,748 (+/- 1.3% at 1sigma) using CPI,GDP and wage indexes.

I have managed to negotiate (with difficulty) an out the door price of $24,600. This includes a new trailer (the BW Karavan trailer is too wide to fit in my driveway).

I'm arriving at the conclusion that this is fair price. Used 150 Montauks are going for $18,000 to $20,000 but when I factor in tax and a new trailer, I'm close to my new cost.

Does anyone have comment on how the 150 Montauks handle in large bays (like San Francisco Bay). I'm going for a sea trail soon.
