The author of this book belongs to WC as well, his screen name is OIA. Occasionally he chimes in and says hello.

Sounds like a good vacation read...:-)
Note these guys are not the only ones who have done something like this in a 17. There was a guy from Upstate NY that navigated along the east coast to Fla, close to the BW plant. He was by himself, no passengers...

I've read it. It will make you want to try it...but maybe in a little bigger whaler. Also, a cuddy cabin would be nice!

Hello Everyone
Thanks for the kudos, I was wondering where all the recent sales were generated. The voyage: Ft. Lauderdale to New York to Chicago to New Orleans in a Montauk 17, took place in 1987 but, it was about five years ago I discovered the daily journals from the trip, that I forgot I kept.
Curious, I wrote about 15 pages, which I handed to some friends. The general consensus was "Except for the fact you clearly missed the day in grade school when they taught they're, there and their, it's pretty good." So I kept on writing and three-and-a-half years later I self published Only In America: An American Boating Adventure (July, 2008).
It's a great way to see the country and I highly recommend it. There are many advantages to traveling in a small, fast Whaler. That, and as I'm sure many of you know, the boating on the east coast is fantastic. We went from Ft. Lauderdale to New York and only had to venture into the Atlantic for 40 miles (which happens to be the last 40, where we got lost in the fog and the motor wouldn't start). It would be like putting your boat in the water in San Diego and traveling all the way to Seattle and never having to go ino the Pacific Ocean.
Thank you again,
John Mirassou

I can also throw my comments in. I've read the book, and thought it was great! My 14yo son has also read it, and passed it along to his 15yo friend. All really, really enjoyed it, and thought the book well written, funny, and informative. Get the book and read it. It is a pretty quick read, just because you don't often put it down.
It has my highest recommendation!!

I recieved my copy Monday I am not a reader. I have never been able to read more than a couple chapters a night resulting in about a Month or two to read a book cover to cover. And not too many at that! But it is now Wednesday and I just finished. I don't know if it was because of intrest in Whalers or the great storys or the feeling of joining a road/boat trip I always wanted to take but never was brave enough to take. I could not put it down! All my spare time was invested, this is the first time I have visted this site since Sunday. I think it is a great story. Bob

Hi all friends, you are fortunate to enjoy Boston Whaler, because where I live and there is the dream of my life for fishing. I live in Tenerife, Canary Islands and took time to save a little money to buy BW, 14 would be good for my engine but with not having a lot of money but I fear that I see to Tenerife very difficult if not impossible Now I am with the google translator to read to you friends and dream ...
I apologize for not speaking well with the google translator. Thank you.

"Only in America" is a great read. I love to read and normally read a book a week, depending on how busy I am with work. I read this one in 2 nights--I couldn't put it down.
You feel like you are right there on the boat with the Johns. On a side note, the author signed the book to my 7 year old whaler fanatic son. I thought that was really nice of the guy. My son wants to display the book on his desk in his room.
If you love whalers and you love being on the water, don't wait. Buy the book and read it--you won't regret it!

I read the book in two days, and then passed it on to another Whaler buddy. If you like Whalers, you should enjoy the book!
