I have a vintage 16'7" Nauset. The title registration says 1968, the previous owner believed it was a 1969. There is not Hull number, but there is a stencil. The stencil reads 30024. There is no letter in the stencil and it is white not black. The hull is the BW off-white with a blue interior.
I spoke with Customer Service and they told me I need more digits in my stencil number. Any ideas?
Thanks - Chuck

I did find some additional data on Continuous Wave regarding the stencil number. The data there implies this hull could be earlier model than 1968 as the letters in the stencils do not appear until 1969.
The white stencil continues to throw me.

Chuck -
Welcome to WC.
There are 3 articles (Left sidebar under Articles) on Hull identification numbers. It may be helpful to read those for a start.

Thanks Phil.
I did not see any distinction of white versus black stencils. Did I miss something?

If I read the list right, your number would lead me to say it is a 1962 or 1963. That may be right since the Nauset was introduced in 1962. See link to Model history

I "think" the white color was used for stenciling on the blue interiors and black for the desert tan and white interiors.

Ahh. That makes sense. Any speculation on why the title/registration (1968) and previous owner (1969) could be so contradictory? The gentleman I bought it from told me that it was in his family since 1972.
I suspect this make remain a mystery.

Not much of a mystery with those numbers.
Our article shows that number as being a 1962 or 1963 model.
Here is the information from our article. Maybe this will be easier for you to read. I will put the numbers below in bold where your number fits in the series.
16'/17' HULL SERIAL NUMBERS (prior to 1972)
1961-1962 ......... 3000 thru 3999
1962-1963 ......... 30000 thru 31499
1963 ................. 31500 thru 31600
1964 ................. 31601 thru 33000
1965 ................. 33001 thru 34399

Thanks Joe.
When I spoke to Customer Service, they told me I had the stencil number wrong and the year data (title/registration and previous owner) I had pointed to either 1968 or 69. The hull being an earlier model is fine, I just want to know for sure.

Chuck,
As you are finding out, paper registrations are no indication of what year anything was made.
As an example, registrations from one state to another can change the year on the paper work. The boat could be a 1962 sold to someone else in another state in 1968 and registered as a 1968... However, the hull numbers don't lie.

Thanks Joe.
Having a '62/3 versus a '68/9 is okay with me.
