My finished Nauset Restoration

Member Posts: 18 Comments: 0 Joined: 08/03/07	Here's a link to a Picassa album with pictures of my 1965 Nauset. I found the boat 2 years ago. Ironically in my wife's hometown where she grew up. Ironically the same year she was born, 1965. And the Serial number is the zip code of her home town too. So she let me buy it. I started off simply repairing some screw holes on the rub rail where an old top was snapped in place. I got carried away and decided to re-gel coat the hull with original color from Mini Craft. The interior was very nice so that only needed some small patching of screw holes here and there. We pulled the brass drain tubes. Created new ones. Thank you Tom W Clark for your insight and experience with this. The info on the sight was very helpful. The original blue print downloads were used a lot too. Pulled all the wood out and refinished. Created a custom Eastport bench with half a back rest. Two reasons; an Armstrong dive ladder in the back, and in the Bahamas you constantly stern anchor at public docks. Bought new original rub rail, glued it on with 5200, then with caulk and others they all failed and fell off. Finally used 3M 4000 and it stuck well after trying many different glues on a sample 2x4. Put the battery in the console to clean up the floor as we would have dive fins, etc tossed back there. It sits well with the weight up there too and it's dry and tidy. New Mills canvas Sun Top and Mooring Cover and Sunbrella seat cushions to match our Bertram at www.bertram26.com, Sapphire Queen. Shrink wrapped it and shipped it over last week. Splashed it on Wednesday. Handed the keys to my wife as an "I love you gift". It felt almost as fun as giving her an engagement ring over 15 years ago. She's thrilled and everyone in the islands stops and comments on it. It's as impressive as the Hinkley down the dock at a fraction of the price. My brother came up with the name Tilloo Canoe. She will reside inside our garage on Elbow Cay in the Bahamas when not in the water. Everyone who's been around knows it's a a classic Boston Whaler. I have many vendors and people to thank for helping get this boat back to it's original state. I hope you all enjoy and appreciate this beauty. Member Posts: 18 Comments: 0 Joined: 08/03/07	Shipping it to Marsh Harbour from Riviera Beach, along with 13 large cardboard boxes and a plastic fishing tube was $700ish through Tropical Shipping. I dropped it off there on the trailer with the boxes. They sail on Saturdays for MH, it arrives Sunday and it took till Wed to clear customs. You have to pay Duty on all your stuff, include receipts, Title, bill of sale, etc. You also need a customs agent. I use Arawak Agency or Fredericks Agency. Fredericks can get your Bahamas title as well, very convenient. We launched it in MH, and drove it over to Elbow Cay instead of waiting on the small shipping barge to take the whole thing with the trailer. We'll get the trailer sent over this week.

I would suggest you build a personal page and upload your photos to it rather than have a link to Photobucket. We discourage links to outside photo hosting sites since members occasionally change their albums and photo hosting sites are not forever (i.e.Yahoo photos). In the future, members will look for articles and photos and there is nothing worse than finding a great thread that has dead links.

I want to re-gel coat the inside with the same blue as original. Did you re-gelcoat? How do you do it, if you don't mind sharing? Live and Let Die was one of my all time favorites as a kid, after Jaqueline Bissett in the Deep of course . We used to take our 13 whalers out and pretend to be those guys. I had a late 60's 13 footer and always wanted the "bigger" whaler. While in the Bahamas last week with the Nauset, every older person approached me with a story about "When they had a whaler as a kid" and it was fun remeniscing with them. My wife and kids will spend a lot more time out there and they will all have the opportunity "grow up with a whaler". That's really the Boston Whaler legacy I think. I have a local guy that shot the hull, SeahorseFiberglassDesign.com, talk to Val, he's a nice guy. Since I spent 2 years doing the same boat I could give you some advice so you don't make some of the same mistakes I did. Steve
