Hey Folks,
The center console window frames on my Outrage are showing signs of pitting. I am also seeing pitting on the t-top frame work. Can anyone tell me of a good fix other than powder coating same? I understand that powder coating is rather expensive, but that it lasts better than paint or other fixes. Or, should I just start with 1500 wet/dry paper and then move to rubbing compound, then polishing compound to finish the process. By so doing, the darkened areas of the pitting will continue to show, but will be reduced and will no longer be 'bumps' on the surface.
Any help from someone more experienced with metal restoration and polishing would be appreciated.
Regards,
Joe Bauer

You are correct on the sanding and polishing. You can sand it down and polish it to a mirror shine, the problem is the anodized finish will be gone. It will weather quickly depending on how much it is exposed to the elements. I did help a guy paint his ageing t top with appliance paint from home depot a couple of years ago. It was a cheep alternative to powder coating and seemed to make a pretty durable finish. I know I will get slammed for even suggesting such as spray paint but it is all about how much money a person wants to spend and the age and style of the top did not warrant spending the funds to powder coat.

That's a pretty good idea if fund's are low, protect's the metal too.
This is "W/C"...No Slamming allowed...(we would'nt do it to you anyway).

I know there are primers for aluminum that would allow you to use a lot of different paints. we just figured paint for appliances would give a durable finish with out all the extra prep work. It was a really old top and leaning post and the almond color went well with the tan whaler.

To All -
Many thanks for your replys about the aluminum pitting and your solutions. I would have never thought about appliance paint - wonderful idea. I believe that I will either re-paint the metal or go for the powder coating. The comments about the metal quickly showing signs of the pitting again makes me shy away from the sanding and polishing concept.
Again, my sincere appreciation for your collective and individual help.
Regards,
Joe Bauer

Bake, Do you know how that paint job on the T-top held up over time? It's a great idea if it works.

Actually I am sure it held up well. I did the gas tank That I had built for my 15 footer about 8 years ago. I even sprinkled non skid on the top of the tank. I have sold the boat to a friend in the last 2 years but the tank still looks good.
