Okay, here's an "off the wall" idea. I want to come up with a design for my Montauk to carry my kayak. Thinking about something to fit into my rod holders which are clamped to the rail but i'm not sure of the loads and forces generated (i'll be traveling in the Pacfic). Also I need to design it to make laoding and unloading on the water simple.
I am going to Catalina for 2 days of camping in the Montauk and I would like to take my kayak.
q: Can you lay it on edge outside the railing and have it resting on the gunwhale? Seems like giving it a solid foundation would be better than hanging it in the air with just the railing mounting points, which I think would work loose over time.
If it's mounted solid and aft and on edge, even if you don't ever launch it you've got a nice place to store extra six packs.

I've used Yakima racks and set two one man outrigger canoes on one my montauks. Worked out well. There is a one man outrigger canoe race held in April that starts on Catalina. Every year we bring down whalers. I've done the same set up on a 17' Outrage II and an older 21' BW. Our newest rig (25' Guardian, is being set up to carry 12 canoes)
No problem fitting a small kayak (small compared to 21' one man outrigger canoe). For the one man race, we launch out of Dana Point, so that's a 40 mile run.
