Member Posts: 12 Comments: 0 Joined: 06/16/09	Hello everyone, I'm looking at a Boston Whaler that is for sale, but I haven't talked to the guy about details just yet (I'm receiving info through 3rd party as of right now and have to wait to talk to him Thursday). I knew where the boat was and the seller's friend told me that it hasn't been run in 10 years (was his father's boat and passed away). So, I know the motor at the very least needs a tune up. The hull is in great shape, no dings or cracks, but the paint is in need of an overhaul and so is the woodwork. These don't bother me since it will be a decent project to play around with. So, I have a few questions: Can anyone help me figure out what model this is? and, I'm only paying 1000 for the boat and trailer; is this worth the price? The gelcoat will last you longer and look better. You can bring back the shine using rubbing compound, buff magic or wet sanding. It all depends on where your starting from.

I'm going to get more info in a couple of days, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy it as it only needs some cosmetic work and at the worst another used motor. He's throwing in a newer trolling motor and a fish finder so I can't complain about the price.

One thing to consider with a 15" transom is that there aren't any new 40hp ss engines being made that I know of. A lot of people with the 15" transom either put on some kind of jackplate for a longshaft motor, go to a 25-30hp ss or find a good used ss 40hp when they repower. I would try to clean it up like Kamie suggests. The gelcoat looks pretty clean in the photos.

I think 1000 is fair for the trailer, the boat, the motor (although unknown whether it runs correct), a trolling motor and fish finder. I'll probably be picking it up soon and starting a personal page through the transformation process. On a side note, the gelcoat looks to be faded in spots where the pics do not show. Is there anyway to bring that shine back or will I have to have it sanded and painted?

You don't mention any spider cracks if the only problem is oxidation don't paint try the search engine for wet sanding, compound & waxing. You can make that gelcoat look new! I've been doing nothing but researching since I found this boat and I think I am hooked! I'm doing research now on how to clean and bring the non-skid interior back up to luster if I can, as well as the gelcoat.

You do not have to paint gelcoat to get back the shine. You do have to put in a little work, but the results are worth it.
