My Tach starting jumping all over the place today after a few hours on the water. I also noticed my fish finder displaying a low voltage warning a few times as well. After searching many articles these seem to be symptoms of a failing rectifier/regulator.

Here is my dilemma. I am out of town for work this week and want to get on the water for the NYC Whaler Run next weekend.

Does anyone know a good mechanic in the Northern NJ vicinity that I can have fix this problem ASAP? I am sure I can fix this myself, but I just don't have the time before next weekend

What brand and size of motor might you be talking about?

You probably can still use the boat as long as you charge the battery each day before using it.

Joe,

Thanks for the quick reply, I have a 100hp Commercial Engine

1989 Evinrude V4 E100STLCEM

Would really hate to be the one towed behind the other 100 or so boats next weekend in NY Harbor

Ed,

Once the engine is started, it will continue to run on a dead battery.

Most motors of this era have an emergency rope start feature. Does yours?
Have you ever tried rope starting your engine?
Everyone should in my opinion as you never know when it may be necessary.

Joe,

I do not have a rope start on my engine. If I can not find a mechanic to leave boat with this week, should I go ahead and order new OMC regulator/rectifier to install prior to next weekend? By the way i just installed a new warning horn as per your write up, great info............

Ed,

Emergency rope start. Not a regular rope start.

According to the BRP Online Parts Catalog, your engine has emergency rope start.
You seem to be missing the rope.
I am attaching a photo of the 1989 engine cover that shows item #20 as the emergency rope.
Part #378347

I would highly recommend you, or anyone else, make sure they have this rope in the boat at all times if your engine has the capability.

Ed call me, I do know someone. Not sure if he would look at it so quick. He also make boat visits. He is in the town of Greenwood lake.

How would you define low voltage? anything between 12 and 14.5 is good. At low speed or idle you will see about 12V, higher at higher RPM
