I am going to repower with a new 4 stroke and am looking to Whaler Central for opinions/advice. The transom of my 1995 21' outrage is structurally sound and rated for 300 hp. Other than horsepower, torque, and $$$ the 225 & 250 Yamaha 4.2 liter offshore mechanical models are identical in all aspects including weight(551lbs dry). I would like to have the extra horses but am a little concerned with the torque that these 4 strokes produce. So let's hear it, Do you think the 250 will be too much for the 22 year old transom? What about fuel burn? Thanks

I had no idea the 1995 Outrage 21 was rated to 300 HP. My 1992 Outrage 19 is only rated to 150. Man, that is a lot of power for a boat that size -- it must really fly w/a 300!

Good luck with the re-power!

Higher torque should have no noticeable impact on the transom. The transom is simply a part of the hull where the engines are attached. The entire hull will contain the torque. The hull will react along with the transom.

I can't speak to the torque directly, but if the hull is rated for the horsepower and the transom is in good shape, I would not be concerned about it.

Regarding fuel burn, there will be no mileage penalty whatsoever in going with the higher horsepower model. Obviously if you are running the 300 at a speed the 225 cannot achieve, you'll burn more fuel, but if you throttle back it will consume at the same rate the 225 would at that same speed. Assuming you'll be going with a higher pitch prop for the more powerful motor, you may even save fuel over the 225 running at the same speed.

Hi Wyatt,
I'm looking for info on your boat in the Whaler models and specs section, but am having trouble finding it. Can you or anyone point it out to me? Thanks.

I see there are a couple of personal pages where what looks like your hull was repowered with a 4.2L 250. It was not completely clear, but one of them made reference to 59 MPH with the 250. That seems plenty fast to me...

What are the specs for how much weight the transom is designed for (engine weight)?
If you want to stay on the lighter side, you may want to also look at the 200 in-line Yamaha, it's the lightest in it's class.
That motor is matched with many 21-23ft boats
