I just bought a 1980 13' Whaler "classic" sport rigged with a 1992 Evinrude 40 hp (model E40ELENJ) that runs, but has a defective trim and tilt mechanism.
The former owner of the boat told me that when he replaced the trim motor he inadvertently drove a bolt into the hydraulic fluid reservoir of the tilting ram (!). He has tried to fix the resulting leak with some sort of epoxy compound, but is unsure how this repair will last. Also, when he reassembled the hydraulics, there was a part left over. Not very reassuring...
A new trim unit costs more than the whole motor is worth, so I'm looking for a used or rebuilt unit to swap out with the old one. My questions are:
1. How much should I expect to pay for a functioning trim unit for that 1992 Evinrude 40HP?
2. Is there a reputable source for these that anyone has used?
3. Are there any particular challenges to replacing that part myself? Or should I hire a marine mechanic?
Thanks in advance for any pointers anyone want to share.
I just had mine repaired by the dealer, it was very corroded. He said the heated the area, and drove the pins out, after removing the retaining rings. I watched a youtube video of this Dangar Marine I think. If I had watched this first, I would have given it a try. Mine only needed a seal cap on the tilt ram. If it's in bad shape check out used ones on ebay, the same model is used for many motors. Good Luck
