Trying to decide before I drop 20K on a brand new Yamaha 300 outboard.. Does it make sense to just move up from my 2004 Whaler Outrage to a 2006-2008? From what I see the boats are almost identical, And I do not want to inherit any new problems either. Just wondered what others suggest.

Thanks

(corrected abbreviated year to full 4 digit year per guideline #1 at the top of this page)

Shawn -

I don't see any reason to go up in years for a similar model.

By selling and buying another boat, you wipe the slate of reliability and familiarity clean. Yikes.

What is at the root of the thought to update? Repower cost?

Yes, Just thought I could maybe find a slightly newer boat which would get me out of the 225 Merc 2 Stroke I have now. Just find it underpowered. Also I wouldn't have to spend the extra on reupholster and new roof canvas ( Would have a fiberglass T-Top)

Shawn, it seems you are asking whether instead of ditching your current outboard and buying a new one, you could sell your current boat outright and get a newer one with a motor that will work better for you.

I can't fault your thinking - it never makes economic sense to put a new motor on a boat. So unless you really, really love your current setup, it's probably worth looking around and seeing if you can find a good deal.

On the other hand, for many people the lack of a choice of motor brands keeps them from considering buying a Whaler, so putting a new motor of your choice on an existing hull is one way around it.

Can you really get a Yamaha F300 and controls for $20K? I would have thought it was more like $30K.

Tim

There's a 2014 F300 with 240 hrs on it for 17k on Ebay. Still under warranty for 2 more years... I'm eyeballing it for my Outrage 240.

The seller states list price is $26k. No one purchases at list prices. I call BS.

If you love your hull, invest in replacement cushions and a F250 or ETEC 250 or Honda 250.

Selling and updating will cost probably more due to depreciation and taxes.

Phil T,

Why the constant arguing, condescension, and know it all? Have you ever driven an Outrage 240? Have you been in one? You argue with every single person on this site and tell them they are wrong in all matters. This boat is grossly underpowered with a 225 and everyone knows it. Everytime someone posts something you snark at it. Why tell me that someone is charging too much for a engine on eBay? Does it make you feel better in some way?

Go ahead and ban me from this site which I enjoy reading... I don't care, but you need to treat people with more respect and stop contradicting everyone else and branding yourself as the sole authority.

I'm sure you will delete my account for this, but I'm just telling you like it is.
