1976 19 Outrage- repowering ? 115 or 150 hp? help!

Member Posts: 5 Comments: 0 Joined: 07/25/16	My 2003 Suzuki 140 hp is shot and I need to repower my 1976 BW Outrage 19. Will it take/run efficiently a Yamaha 150 hp? or is the 115 better? I spoke to Whaler's customer service today who did not recommend any motor over 500 libs and the dry weight on the Yamaha is 478 lbs. Thanks. I have a Mercury 150 four stroke that I have on my 20' outrage and love it. Had it done in Falmouth. They did a great job. Love the engine. Well under 500 lbs. If you go with Honda, the 150 HP version weighs the same and woudl make more sense in my opinion. The Mercury 150 Fourstroke is lighter and more powerful, though. On the other hand, if you want to try a 115, the Mercury 115 Fourstroke is a 2.1L engine that weighs more than 100 lbs less than that Honda 135. It's a very powerful 115, has a great reputation, and would save you a fair bit of money too. The top-end Pro/XS version of that engine is probably worth the extra couple hundred dollars.

Mercury 175 black max 50 mph 1993? Yamaha 115 40 mph The boat always had a kicker motor too. I thought the 115 Yamaha was fast enough for me, the 175 Mercury was scary fast.

"Tony - In the Reference section under Articles is a Engine guide showing choices and weights. http://www.whalercentral.com/articles...ticle_id=6 Every manufacturer make decent, reliable and efficient engines so the real factors for a repower choice are: Horsepower Price Features Service Weight If you often run heavy, tow a skier or tube or want high speed you should lean toward a 135 or 150 hp. If you run light with only a few occasions of heavy, consider a 115 hp. If running in the ocean, I lean toward maximum horsepower for the times running against the large swells/waves. Note- You will be very hard pressed to get a dealer to do a re-power in the high season. Most are too busy with emergency repairs. Everyone needs to remember there is a big difference between the 1970's Outrage 19 and the 1986-1989 Outrage 20. The Outrage 20 has a deep V and is ~400 lbs heavier.

Member Posts: 5 Comments: 0 Joined: 07/25/16	Thanks everyone for your very helpful comments and information. I think I'm leaning towards the 150 . The local RI Yamaha dealer said he will get the motor on this week if I decided on a Yamaha as they have it in stock and will squeeze us in.
