I currently have a1986 90 hp Johnson that needs to be replaced. What engine and hp would you recommend? Can I drop down to a 70 hp and still have enough power? I have been hearing a lot of problems with the erects, is this true? Any info would be a great help.

70hp will be fine.
Problems with E-TEC's probably are mostly from older members.

Firstly, who is saying this? Is it a mechanic or sales rep who sells another brand? Is it a boater who just repowered with another brand?
Honestly, there is so much misinformation around, it is astounding.
All manufacturer's offer great 70 and 90 hp motors. It is no longer about reliability, the decision is now about:
-price
-reliable quality service
-features
Anyone tell you different is blowing smoke!

I'm always a fan of going with the maximum horsepower, as it's more versatile. With modern fuel-injected motors, you really aren't saving gas in going with a smaller motor - you can always just back off the throttle and get the same economy. Therefore, in your situation I would go with the eTec 90 or even the 90HO.
If you don't want to go quite as fast, or be quite as versatile, go with a 70.

I would also add that while all major brands are close in price and are much more reliable than they were in the past do not forget about service. Having a service department you trust and is close to you can really make a difference in case of any type of engine problem whether self inflicted or manufacturer defect.

Phil, if you are going to edit my post & change it's meaning just delete the post.
Moderator Note - Tim- I recall only correcting the model name due to auto-correct. Moderator edits are for correcting abbreviations, model names, typo's etc. If I did delete or change anything else it was a mistake and I apologize.
