I have a 1966 16' custom it came with a 115 hp mercury on it . Is that gonna get me in trouble with the man ? The engine was installed when the boat was still in use by the MD- DNR a long time ago. Someone told me that because the boat is only rated for 100hp that I could have an issue. Does anyone know the truth?
It's possible you might encounter a few Insurance companies that won't take it, but there are plenty that will. I think 115 is ideal power for a 16/17 Whaler. It's plenty of reserve power, and permits quiet low rpm cruising, with good fuel economy. Mine will do 50, but I rarely run it over 35 MPH and generally get 5 MPG @25-30 MPH cruise.
