1998 Johnson 175 Ficht Lower Unit Gear Case Water Breach
My gear case oil was like a milk shake when I drained it at the end of last season. I am hoping someone can direct me to a thread on here discussing lower unit seals.
I ran 10psi through the gear oil fill fitting and discovered the seal on the top (shaft bearing housing) was the culprit. I replaced this fitting successfully. Unfortunately I stripped out the threads on the lower unit where one of the water pumping housing bolts goes. Anybody have any tips on how I can repair this?
Standard thread repairs can be made with helicoils or keenserts. See you local Fastenol store. They both take some special tools and the damage can be made much worse if not done correctly. The store may know someone experienced that would do the repair or show you how.
If it's only 1 of the screws holding the impeller housing down, you may not need to worry about it. You can always use a tap and go to the next size up screw, or even easier, JB-WELD a stud into the remaining orifice and use a nut to hold it down. Works the same way and is a lot less of a hassle.
