Wanting to take my 17 Montauk from Anacortes to Orcas this summer. Any water to be concerned with? I know people kayak back and forth, so it seems a Whaler would be fine
Hello,
I keep my boat on Orcas, and have made the trip a number of times. The only water to be concerned with is Rosario Strait if there is a strong breeze from the south. Even then, your boat will be fine even if your back is not. The first time I did it in predicted marginal conditions, I consulted with friends who gave me the same advice. I just went slowly enough that fillings stayed in place and all was fine. These trips were all in a 1988 Montauk 17 that I just sold.
After that, you are pretty much protected.
Good Luck. When are you planning on doing the trip?

Where on Orcas are you going? You might want to do the storm route and cross Rosario to the North through Obstruction or Peavine Pass. Might be a shorter route depending on where you are heading.
