Looks like I am getting the approval from upper Management to re power, need to replace the 1979 80HP Mercury, still works but is tempermental and I do not trust it anymore.

After much research on brands I am quite convinced it will be an E-TEC, now I just have to decide on HP

Here are some initial quotes I got

90 HP $6655 US motor only plus whatever is included in current Evinrude promotions
90 HP $7882 US same as above plus all cables, installation and setup and aluminum prop

60 HP $4336 US Motor only plus Evinrude promotions, lighter weight is interesting

Unfortunatly no 75HP in stock for clearance.

These are all new in the crate, how do these compare to US pricing?

Does any body have real-life experience with the 60 on a classic 17 hull, typical load for us is between 300 to 700 pounds of crew, 2 batteries, one electric motor, 12 gallons of gas and we keep the gear to a minimum no live well or large coolers, If the new motor is realy as easy to start as everyone says we just might drop one battery and the trolling motor (75 pounds)

Occasional tubing, longest single run we did last year was 7 miles, inland lake use.

My current motor gives us 32MPH loaded and maybe 34 with a very light load, 17 pitch 4 blade Nemesis.

We happily cruise in the mid twenties to get to our fishing spots.

Looking forward to all comments

Marc

Hi,
Hopefully useable experience here with a lightly outfitted 1970 17'...

Had a tired but reliable 1982 50hp Johnson.
Ran great solo+tools or with two kids.
About 17-19 cruising speed - 26-28 fast cruise.
Great fuel consumption.

I loved the performance as a solo workboat,
however very slow to plane with 2 adults and 3 kids with gear.
Kinda a dog actually.
Doubt it would pull a tube that great.

Replaced with a super clean low hour 1988 Yamaha 90.
What more to say than awesome.
Cruises 24-26 at 34-3600 rpm,
Fastest so far at 43 mph at around 5500.
Don't really need to go that fast though,
the gas disappears so quickly!
Main thing is extra power when the conditions are rougher.
Weight does change things but isn't as detrimental.

The tough part is the extra 3 G's.
I'm obviously a cheapskate in our outfitting!!
but I'd save for the 90 on a family boat...

TP

As I was ready to make a move on a new ETEC 90, I have come across someone that has purchased a new motor and is offering me his Mercury 1999 90 HP that is in the process of being rebuilt For the cost of the rebuild, not sure what that entails I will find out on Saturday when I visit the shop where it is being rebuilt.

Any one with experience with this motor please chime in, I would imagine that if I do go with this motor the same rules apply to mounting height and prop selection.

Not sure if my current Merc gauges will work with this motor as well as my Morse controls and cables?

thanks

Marc

Just got a great surprise this morning, got a call from an Evinrude dealer and asked me when I could bring my boat to get the motor installed, I had no clue what he was talking about as my wife told me that a new motor was not going to happen and either fix mine, find a used one or sell the boat.

Well she went out and bought me a brand spanking new ETEC 90 with all the cables, controls, gauges and a Viper prop and 7 year warranty, she even got a good deal under $10K Canadian excluding install.

Now how good is that.

I can not wait for the lakes to thaw.

Anyone want a old Merc?

Cheers

It's great you are able to take the unknowns away with this repower. I'm sure the etec 90 will serve you well for the next 40 years.

I am sure somewhere it will cost me, but she got me good, I was convinced that I had to find a way to keep the old Merc running.

You're going to love that Etec 90. I have one on my 1990 Newport. Starts right up, sips gas and is real quiet.
Make sure they mount it all of the way up and it'll be fine.

That's awesome.
I'm looking at the same engine also.
We're did she get one for under 10k in Canada?.
I'm in the Kootenay's of B.C.
Closest dealer is in Kelowna.
Have fun with the new outfit.

In the lake Memphremagog area east of Montreal, they were the lowest price but all dealers were very close in pricing but some seemed to be holding back on some Evinrude promotions, the big kicker was the Included Viper prop that others were not offering, dealer was telling me he had until end of day today for the Viper promotion.

I did a lot of the leg work, then my wife shut me down, had a crappy weekend, now I can not get the grin off my face

Good luck with your future purchase

Enjoy and never stop grinning.
