Boat is on the hard for the winter season but Christmas id coming up soon and I want a new prop from the kids.
I ran a couple of days ago on glass like water @ WOT 5,950 rpm with my 2008 Montauk 150 lightly loaded (extra 300 lbs over dry weight) and my Mercury 60HP ELPT with 2.33 ratio Bigfoot and hit 32.2knts (37 mph) which is great.
I have the OEM supplied Vengeance 48-17314 stainless prop.
I like the top end but hate my hole shot. Mercury prop calculator will not allow me to put my gear ratio in and therefore gives me a bogus answer.
I like to go with a 4-bladed SS prop for better acceleration and will be happy with 30 knts top end (34.5 mph)
Please advise what prop to ask Santa for.
Are you going from neutral to full WOT then backing down?
You will probably loose 5 mph at WOT with a 4 blade prop.
I read one prop guru's comments stating his disappointment with the Mercury Vengeance prop. He recommended a 13-1/4" x 13" Stiletto Advantage with a Flo-Torq III hub kit to reduce prop rattle and shifting clunk.
Where is Tom Clark? Have you considered a Stiletto four blade propeller? I understand that Yamaha has purchased Stiletto and many/most(?) of their propeller are now branded as Yahamas.
For the Mercury Bigfoot gearcase, which is the same gearcase used on the Merc 75's and 90's, the lowest pitch 4-blade performance prop they offer is the 17" Trophy Plus, a really hot prop but too large for your engine.
I would recommend you try the new 4-bladed Mercury aluminum Spitfire or Quicksilver version called Nemesis. It supposedly is a good perfromer, with increased acceleration and great holding. May work fine on your application. Go to mercurymarine.com and do some research on it.
Other than that, you will be looking at aftermarket brands. Stilettos are now discontinued, but being sold for more money as Turbo props.
Phil thank you for the link to Ken (prop guru) I emailed him and he emailed and called me back with good pointers.
His advise was get me current 3 bladed 13-3/8"x 14" pitch fine tuned giving it a little more cup and pitch and recommended a shop he uses for that.
As this is a present request i relayed the info to Santa Claus and we'll see what happens.
He thinks the tuning for approx. $100 or so with shipping could give me a better hole shot and probably keep my top end.
Another option was buying a SCD4 Powertech (SS 4 bladed) which of course will run $400+
Maybe try a Spitfire we have to wait until next Spring and I'll report back.
