Newtauk, 17',1988 /. 1999 90hp Evinrude, have in hand son's 18hp short shaft 18", weight about 85#, can I use this as a kicker, or do I need to sell it and get a 9.9 long shaft 20" ???? On hand no money needed, also has whale tail. Run good and a clean motor. What ya think. Mike
Given the weight of that engine I am assuming it's an older engine. If so, I don't know how they measure the shaft length. On my Montauk anything shorter than 20" wouldn't work, but that's not to say a bracket wouldn't allow it to go down a few inches more. Keep in mind weigh is a big factor on these boats. I would not suggest anything heaver than a new 9.9 4 stroke. Also, many people use lesser hp on these boats. I replaced my 2 stroke mercury 8hp with a 4 stroke 9.9. The new motor doesn't push it any faster than the 8hp and the additional weigh is noticed.
Traded 18hp, short shaft for 1986 Evinrude 9.9hp 20" shaft, about 78#,installed new fuel pump, fuel lines, water pump and lower end oil, ready to run now. I've got it mounted directly to the upper transome , with the wing screws, should I also use the through bolt mounting ???????How do I trailer it, up, down, transome saver, etc. ??????thanks for any help Mike
