Good morning everyone. Let me introduce myself, my name is Matthias and I'm new to the forum. I purchased an outrage of 21 1978. I have the opportunity to buy a verado 150 of 2006. does anyone have experience with this engine? is the right motor for this boat? I accept your advice. Thank you.

Matt,

Those Gen 1 Verado 150s have a good reputation but there have been a few small issues with them such as the famous "fuel float" problem. Almost all have updated floats done under warranty or by courtesy of Mercury.

I suggest you go to www.veradoclub.com and do a search on the Gen1 150 for more information. They have a great bunch of true experts on that site. You can also ask a few questions for free without the requirement to buy a membership.

Thanks for the reply. the Verado should buy it Tuesday, do you have any advice for me on other engines? I could also opt for other engines and other powers. Thank you.

There were also issues with lower units on some of the original Verado's. I recall they have since updated the lower units on some HP models.

There must be reasons why they no longer make the Verado 150.

If I remember correctly, it was the heaviest 150 at that time.

Joe,

The Verado 150 Gen 2 engines replaced the 135 Verado. It was in production for several years and I was unaware it had been discontinued. Perhaps the new 150 Four Stroke non-Verado has replaced it.

It was in both Gen 1 and Gen 2 form an all around excellent engine.

Mambo,

I believe those early lower unit issues were with the higher HP lin up of Verados.

All,

If you want to know the FACTS concerning the Mercury Verado engine family try veradoclub.com.

The Verado 150 weighed in at 510 pounds.
That is a lot of weight for a 150 as my Evinrude 150 weighed in at 386 pounds.

Also, the Verado 150 was only CARB2 rated.
Not good for Californian market.

Yes, the new Mercury 150 seems to be a replacement and only weighs 455 pounds for a 20 inch shaft and about 470 pounds for a 25 inch shaft.
Here are the current 150hp motors available.

Goodmorning. I chose the verado 150. the engine is an xl version. Yesterday I mounted the engine on my 21.4, I mounted as high as possible, and I did the test at sea. the engine drives fine, I reached approximately 38 knts. but the spray water are amazing, the boat gets wet in the back and I can improve the situation by raising the trim but it is cavitating. I accept suggestions. thanks and sorry for my English is not perfect, I'm Italian.

I'm not sure the XL engine is optimum for your 1978 Outrage 21. Hopefully someone knowledgeable will chime in.
