The current setup is twin 150 Mercury Optis. Thinking about going with a single four stroke 250 / 275 Yamaha. Some advantages I see are; removes about 300lbs off the transom; half the routine maintenance dollars; better fuel efficiency; equilivent performance (?). One downside is the loss of redundancy.
I did read on the 23 conquest (that I have with opti 135's) people that got the single engine had issues with the water on the deck going forward instead of back and also on some of the boats they put a lead weight in the back. Not sure it matters on the outrage because you don't have the cabin but the conquest and outrage use the same hull.
My thought is the boat might ride better with a single and less weight on the stern. I added a 10hp kicker to the back of mine for slow trolling and the boat ride got worse (if that's even possible). Even more so if I have people and few hundred lbs of ice and coolers in the back.
