Bought a new F90 Yamaha 4 stroke motor for my 1987 17ft today. Shop is removing the old Johnson 88, Anyone have any good or bad to say about this new motor. I was going to get the new F70 but the engine case is a two piece and has cast pistons, where the 90 has forged pistons. Anyway I think the 90 will be fine, can scare women and children with it.

I replaced my Johnson 90 2 stroke with the Yamaha 90 4 stroke in 2005. I do not have anything "bad" to say about it at all. Yes the boat sits a little lower back aft, but I moved the battery to the console and it is better.
I get about 5-6 miles per gallon and it starts up the First time. Just remember to change the oil and filter every 100 hours, I did the 500 hour belt and water pump change when it was required. It gets flushed after every use also.
I am glad I chose this motor for my Montauk.

Its a heavy motor, but it is super reliable, quiet, and efficient. My Montauk does 43mph with it and it is linked by NMEA2k to my Lawrance GPS/Sonar. Lots of great data from the engine.

I bought this boat just because of the F90 and couldn't be happier, unless it was lighter...

I have the original Yamaha F100 (2000 year model) on my Montauk. It does not seem stern heavy at all, very reliable but too quiet!

I have owned one Montauk with an F90 Yamaha. One Alert 17' with Montauk console. Both had batteries under the console and both had two 12 gallon Mirax tanks under the RPS. Mount the motor one bolt hole down from the top and prop it correctly. I cant remember the correct size for the prop but I was using Yamaha SS props and the boat topped out at 44 mph at 6000. I purchased my accessories and motors from Shipyard Island Marina in WI. Andy Jr. is a big help and can check the record if necessary. We currently have an F 70 on one of the last classic Montauks from the factory (2002). It tops at 38 mph at 6300. The Yamahas for me have been indestructable.
