Good evening Gents,

I have a question for you all? Has anyone experimented with different propellers on their 13' before? I have read all the recommended sizes and pitch both 3 and 4 blade but I'm looking for some firsthand experience... So does anyone have a Honda 25 horsepower 4-stroke short shaft pushing a 1971 vintake 13'. If it helps we'rs typically with 2-3 adults on board with little or no gear.

Cheers,

Howard

Howard -

Welcome to WC.

I can tell you from experience that a 13' with a 4 stroke 25 hp motor will not perform very well with 3 adults due to the low hp and low torque power band. The right prop will minimize this and the incorrect prop will exacerbate it.

Selecting the appropriate prop is a bit of science and nuance. For the science part we need to know the gear ratio of the motor and what the max rpm range is.

What prop do have on the motor now (brand, size and material) and how does it perform?

At what height is the engine mounted?

Thanks for the quick response! Glad to be amongst the whaler enlightened. The Honda site states top rpm and the gear ratop is 2.08x1...the current prop is 10.1 x 11 pitch 4 blade, but it was damaged when I bought it so I can't test that out...in regards to mounting the hull is a 1971 with the cut out transom. The "hanger" was mounted between a .5" and .75" above the transom. So basically "as low as you can go". : )

(changed abbreviated year to full 4 digit year for clarification)
