I am considering repowering a 22' Revenge, (70 gal fuel, stainless radar arch, 8hp kicker, canvass, downriggers and fishing gear, used on Lake Superior) with an Evinrude Etec 225 HO or 225HP (large block/small block) or 200 HO. The boat's max hp rating is 240hp.
I would consider the new G2 but understand that it is a louder engine. Is that true?
What might I expect to receive on trade-in for the 1984 Yamaha 220 V6 in good running condition?
I have the same hull (1979 22' Revenge) and just powered with a 2009 HO 200 hp E-tec. The HO 200 hp E-tec is the same big block as all the 225 hp. The small block is 135 hp to 200 hp series (non HO). I can let you know in a few weeks about performance. I think all the HO's and 225 hp would do just fine. If you are wanting to save weight the small block is 100 lb less but the block is computerized at 200 hp to be running at the max. for its size. It would be nice to hear from members with the 200 hp or 175 hp Etecs on the 22 ft Outrages (same hull) from that era for performance.
I don't know where you heard that that G2 was louder - both the G1 and G2 are very quiet engines.
Get the G2 if you want the latest in bells and whistles and technology, but for now until the 31st, you can get a G1E-TEC with 7 years of warranty plus free rigging equipment, controls, gauges, etc. See your dealer right away.
I've run the 225 E -TEC on 22' Outrages and they perform over 50 mph. The 200 HO is a strong motor also, so any of the big block E-TECs will work fine for that style of boat.
My source for the engine decibel levels was Evinrude itself. According to the tech I spoke with the G2 line (200hp) runs 8 decibels louder at the driver's seat than the G1 ETec line. That raised my eyebrows so I asked her to repeat it, which she confirmed. That is a significant difference, enough to lock me into the older G1 line.
But I am still curious as to real world experience , vs lab test results. Though I would think 8 dB in the lab is going to translate into more decibels in my ears.
Just speculating, but in what situation is the G2 8db louder? If at idle the difference will be scarcely discernible. Generally at idle you can't tell the engine is running except for the noise from the water tell tail splashing into the water behind the boat. If the difference is at WOT you may ask how much time you will spend at that speed. If the difference is at cruise speed it will be difficult to hear due to the noise of the boat going through the water.
Eight db is significant but the E-TEC is so quiet that it will probably not be unpleasant at any speed.
You may want to study a comparison chart to see how the decibel levels stack up with each manufacturers motors. Be nice to know how an additional 8 decibels impacts. Me....I would go quieter too if given the choice.

Post your question on the Etec Owners Group forum in the G2 section (click the link below), you'll get answers from people who have run these engines.
Also take a look at the first post, lots of information and videos on the G2, and give a read of some of the other owner feedback posts.
The G1 is a great engine, but after learning about all the improvements made to the G2 and reading actual owner feedback on that forum, I wouldn't hesitate go go with one. BRP really did their homework and produced a very impressive engine.
I saw a G-2 Evinrude in a Dealer's showroom, and they are HUGE and heavy looking, considering they are a relatively simple V-6 2-stroke, and also what I would consider a monstrosity. I hate to say that, but that's my opinion. A 250 or 300 HP Merc Optimax is dwarfed by this engine, and much lighter in weight. The highly unconventional, contrived styling (how can a V-6 2-stroke be as tall as an inline 6 4-stroke Verado?), when compared to the smooth rounded lines of the big Yamahas and Verados just looks gaudy and the sharp angular lines and confusing colors seem inappropriate to the lines of today's boats. I don't think one would look very good on a classic Whaler. Letting owners pick color schemes on your product, most of which have no real taste (as in orange 557's), is always risky for a seller, because some will choose terrible combinations, which others will see, and be turned off. My first impression, after shock at it's size, was an apparent effort to make it look tall and narrow like the in-line 6 supercharged Verado.
I'm predicting they will be burning the midnight oil up in WI, trying to re-design the cowlings of this new engine series befroe it's too late. If it is a V-6, they should make it look like a V-6.
To the original poster, I would stay with the much better looking G-1 E-tecs, or wait until you see how the G-2's start sellilng. Otherwise you could get stuck with a white elephant if they do improve the looks of it sometime on the near future.
