I'm thinking of purchasing a used 2005 Yamaha 8hp High Thrust to be used as a backup/trolling motor for my 1987 Outrage. The kicker motor has a 20" shaft with 10hours of use and seller is asking $1500. My outrage is current equipped with a 2003 115hp mercury saltwater.

Anyone owned this kicker motor? would appreciate any information regarding its performance and reliability.. Is the price to much for the year?

I searched the intraweb but didn't find anything useful.

Thanks in advance,

R-

No I don't own the high thrust but do own the standard Yamaha 8hp for my Montauk. I believe mine is a 2010. I bought it last year, but the motor was never used still in the crate. I paid $2050.00. I should mention it's manual start and 20" shaft. The only issue I had was the fuel line connectors and tank. They met the EPA new standards, but the design failed and latter recalled. Other than that the motor runs great. Hope this helps.

I have the 9.9 Yamaha High thrust from about the same year. Great addition to my 1979 22' Whaler Revenge. If I recall hit 7 mph wide open. You will not plane with these kickers. Troll and save gas, nurse yourself home if problems with the main. I paid about the same for mine (used 2 years ago), electric and pull start, but my harness/controls were an additional $600. I got rid of the tiller handled kicker I bought earlier because the tiller handle was in the way. You should study how you plan to mount.

The Yamaha T8's are bullet proof motors. Its one of the preferred motors in the Pacific N/W. I have a 2012 T9.9 on my 23' conquest and love it. Really any of the high thrust motors will drive your boat just fine.

One thing to consider is really the top 2 motors are the Honda and the Yamaha. Both are great motors but there is a big difference in alternator output. The Yamaha is 6amp and the Hondas (at least the newer ones) are 12amps.
