I have an F25ELRB 25 hp besides the zinc near the propellor how many other zincs are there that I should look for. possibly somewhere in the engine area. Thanks licker88
Lick, there are a number of places on line that have Yamaha parts diagrams - simyamaha.com is one of them. Your best bet is to find the correct diagrams for your motor and look it up.
There will typically be anodes shown on the cylinder head or engine block diagrams, and possibly others on the lower unit.
First of all, the term "zincs" is totally obsolete, even though they are still being made and sold aftermarket. They don't work very well. In the outboard and stern drive engine business, zinc has been replaced by all manufacturers with aluminum (alloy) anodes, which give twice the protection because of superior sacrificial action. They are used in both fresh and saltwater applications.
Mercury began the process, discontinuing their zinc anodes and replacing with aluminum back in 1993. At some later point, Yamaha followed suit, and I believe the others now also use only aluminum anodes. The aluminum is easy to determine, since those anodes are much lighter in weight.
To anyone, I recommend you only buy your replacement anodes branded by your engine manufacturer.
I have my 22' 1979 Revenge opened up. I have a "Zinc" ground that is independent both of the motor and negative terminal of battery. It is a plate on the port side of the transom in the water. I have traced the ground wire to my fuel tank and filler hose fittings. It also was connected to the ground of my gauges. I have since grounded my gauges with the battery. It is my understanding that this ground is not supposed to cross connect with the battery ground. Is this a proper time to replace or should I leave well enough alone. No signs of water intrusion on the outside of the transom where it is currently installed. I am upgrading/replacing the wire where accessible.
